Samantha's Bay Leaf Ritual for the New Year

!: Samantha's Bay Leaf Ritual for the New Year

HI would like to share with you a ritual I do every New Year's that is quite involved and requires a lot of thought and meditation time. It is derived from an ancient Greek ritual for prosperity and fertility. As you may recall, ancient Mediterranean Kings and Queens used to wear garlands of bay leaves (as well as olive leaves) as crowns. Bay leaves, and often bayberry leaves, are often used in Alexandrian magic as well, as well to draw success in business and finances. I like this ritual because first of all it is very "white" and it also involves the writing down of your wishes. The writing down of your wishes on 108 bay leaves works in the same way as a positive affirmation. The stating of your goals and desires allows you to properly manifest them in real life. Every year I pull out my old bay leaves and sort through them and I am always astounded by how many of my wishes have actually been granted.

For this you will need:

a blank check

a gold or silver pen (but a green will do if you can't get those colours)

Cinnamon incense

a green, an orange or a yellow or GOLD candle (whichever colour attracts you the most)

Orange oil, bergamot or success oil or Horn of Plenty oil
a package of bay leaves (whole)

an envelope

pretty ribbon

This ritual is for multiple wishes and is best done when you have at least two hours to spare in meditation and quiet. It is best done within ten days before or after the New Year's. After the New Years or on New Year's Day is preferable.

First of all, take a bath in your favourite bubbles (Calgon, take me away!) and put yourself in a calm and peaceful state. You can play some steady rhythmic music if you like - anything that puts you into a bit of a trance (chanting, new age.)

The first thing you are going to do is light the cinnamon incense. Cinnamon is related to the planet Mercury and symbolizes communication and quick results. Then I want you to scratch your name and birth date on the side of the candle. Put the candle plate that is wrapped in tin foil (to represent the moon).

Then I want you to take the blank cheque and write the amount of money that you think you would like to make this year or the amount you need to get out of trouble using a gold or silver pen. Make the cheque payable to the order of yourself and be sure to add a few more bucks in there as fun money.

The idea here is to make this cheque as pretty as possible. Decorate it with lucky symbols such as dollar signs, hearts and flowers so this money is brought to you with a sense of joy. Once you are happy with your cheque, and have signed and endorsed it and everything, I want you to anoint all four corners of the cheque with one or more of the oils mentioned above. To make it even more person adds a dab of your personal perfume.

Place the cheque you wrote to yourself under the dish. Light the candle and say:

"In the name of the I Am that I Am I pray to the Archangels and their legions of light, I pray to the blessed Virgin and her angels of compassion for the following assistance and blessings"

Now open the package of bay leaves. There are two ways of doing this spell -- in a really BIG way or in a more efficient manner. It depends how much time you have. When I did this on my birthday I used 108 bay leaves (or fragments of leaves because sometimes they crumble in the package) but you can use less if you like. I used 108 because it is a real magic number, but you can just do as many bay leaves as you can.

As the candle burns and the incense is burning too, I want you to write on each bay leaf, a single word that represents each thing you would like to happen in the near future. For instance, if you are looking for immigration status thing write the word "Citizenship" on the bay leaf. If you owe the dentist money write, "dentist bill paid". If you would like a lover to return write "lover returns". Each leaf has a wish written on it. On the leaf after write "high paying job", on the next one "safety", "security", "soulmate"... Place the leaves in a circle around the candle in the shape of wreathe so that it looks pretty and keep on doing this until you are all wished out. Your candle should be circled by bay leaves each with a wish written on it.

This usually takes most people quite a while, and before they know it, the candle has burned down.

If you finish writing the leaves early that is ok too, keep burning the candle down to the bottom (so don't get a candle that is too big.) After you have written a wish too, it helps if you "let go of it" and resign your self to the fact that the higher powers are taking care of it.

After you are done writing all of your wishes, I want you to say:

"I consider this done in this hour, in full power according to the will of God, helping all and harming none Amen."

After the candle burns out, I want you to take the leaves and the cheque and put them in an envelope. Seal the envelope, wrap it with a nice ribbon, kiss it and put it in a safe place. Don't look at this again for a year. Just rest assure that all is unfolding in the Universe as it should.

Blessings to all of you this New Year. xxx Samantha

Hair Drug Testing Procedure

!: Hair Drug Testing Procedure

Hair drug testing is one of the commonly used methods of drug testing to determine the presence or absence of the specified drugs or their metabolized traces. It is considered as accurate and can indicate drug use as far back as 90 days. Because the bloodstream feeds hair growth, analyzing a small sample of hair reveals the ingestion of drugs of abuse. Hair testing can test for Amphetamines, Cocaine, Marijuana, Opiates, and Phencyclidine.

Sample Collection

Human hair grows 0.5 inches in a month on average. Hair drug testing gives results approximately 30 to 90 days after drug abuse, as testing laboratories normally require 0.5 and 1.5 inches for testing comparatively. The donor's hair is cut near the rear of the crown and as close to the scalp as possible. A sample of approximately 120 strands is required. If the test subject has little or no hair, or head hair is less than 1/2 inch long, a body hair collection may be conducted. For drug testing, hair sample is possibly collected from chest, underarm, leg or facial hair. If you are conducting for yourself, do not combine hair from different sites on the body.

Testing Procedure

Using a small sample of hair, hair drug testing analysis, and evaluates the amount of drug metabolites entrenched inside the hair shaft.

Testing Procedure includes the following steps.

· Clean the scissors with an alcohol wipe before obtaining hair sample.
· Collect the sample.
· Put the testing sample in the foil. Keep the root end out just about 1/4 inch from the slanted end of the foil. Fold the foil sideways and place the sample inside the envelope with root ends to the left.
· Take the security seal from the left side of the CCF and place it on the bottom of the envelope where indicated. Instruct the donor to initial and date the seal and envelope after the collector has placed the seal on the envelope. The collector then initials and dates the seal and envelope.
· Place the sealed specimen bag into the overnight shipping package and send the specimen to the designated Quest Diagnostics laboratory.

Hair drug testing method is accurate and effective. Lab confirmation tests are also often used to technically confirm the drug presence. Hair testing provides up to 2.5 times the number of positives, when compared with urine specimen testing, and also a longer detection window.

Suggestions for a Cheaper, Greener, added Eco Friendly Christmas and New Year

!: Suggestions for a Cheaper, Greener, added Eco Friendly Christmas and New Year

Christmas tree

o You could always purchase an artificial tree that can be reused for many years, these range from 10 pounds to over 100 pounds. Ours actually looks real!

o If you buy a real tree, pay the Woodland Trust or a different organization to plant one in its place!

Christmas Decorations

o If you have evergreen shrubs and trees - to make sure you have an annual supply of eco-friendly Christmas decorations why not do some of your pruning just before Christmas and use the choice bits for inside? If you have not got any evergreens but have a garden ask for some of these plants as Christmas presents. They may take a few years to grow but then all you will need to do is harvest in December and be as creative as you like.

o Make a homemade wreath using branches trimmed from your garden or somebody elses.

o Purchase handmade decor made from recycled or eco-friendly materials. If possible by Fair trade as well, as they are a great way to support the disadvantaged. While some of these crafts may not be from recycled materials they provide much needed income to needy individuals.

o Ivy is good to drape around pictures, windows and the base of Christmas trees, it will hide the wires of the tree lights. There is as far as I know no substitute for electric fairy lights but as they last for years and use very little power, their impact is relatively low and they do look great.

o One of the advantages of using natural decorations is that after Christmas they do not need to go in the bin they can enter your normal garden waste on the compost heap.

Christmas tree ornaments

o Make homemade ornaments from (painted) pinecones, painted eggshells, crushed (colored) aluminum foil, paper chains, paper snowflakes, old CDs and more!

o Decorate a doll as an angel.

o Do an online search for recycled or homemade tree ornaments for numerous ideas or purchase these recycled or eco-friendly tree ornaments if you cant be bothered to make them.

Gifts
o Buy a subscription to an organisation working to make the world a better place such as the RSPB, RSPCA or Oxfam.

o If you are buying a present that uses batteries make sure the person you are buying it for has a battery charger and buy rechargeable batteries.

o Buy a homemade present, bird table, compost bin. Chocolate cakes often go down very well!
Gift wrap

o Collect extra photocopies or no longer needed papers from work for your children to draw on the back.

o Use colored pictures from your childrens colouring books.

o Use leftover pieces of fabric or wallpaper.

o Use recycled paper.

o Put the gift inside another gift such as a decorative tin, nice wooden box etc.

o Use gift wrap, gift bags and gift boxes, ribbon and bows from last Christmas or previous celebrations. Leave the tags blank on the gifts you are giving so that they can be reused.

Greeting cards & gift tags

o Send an e-card.

o Make a greeting card or tag from scrap paper, fabric or wallpaper.

o Make cards or tags from pieces of food box.

Packing material

o Use saved packing material such as foam or bubble wrap.

o Crush up newspaper into loose balls. This is cheap, quick and lightweight! This is our preferred method for box filler.

After the New Year

o Find out where you can recycle your real Christmas tree or Christmas cards, local councils and supermarkets are a good place to start. They will turn your trees into mulch for use in parks and public gardens.

o Use any wrapping paper that is no longer reusable for shelf liners or craft projects.

o Save boxes, gift bags, wrapping, filler, ribbons and bows for future gift wrapping or craft projects. Give them away to friends, neighbours etc if you have too many to keep.

Unusual Christmas Tree Ideas

!: Unusual Christmas Tree Ideas

When is a christmas tree more than a christmas tree and more akin to a piece of art? After reading the following christmas tree ideas you will realize that there is a very fine line between just a tree and a piece of original sculpture. If you have a passion for unusual christmas trees maybe you will find some of the following ideas inspirational. Keep in mind that most of the christmas tree ideas below work best as miniature tabletop trees or holiday table centerpieces.

The Bead Tree

Bead trees are simply a cone of paper that is circled by a long strand of beads that are glued to it. These beads coil repeated around the cone until they resemble a christmas tree. These unusual christmas trees can be made out of any material that you like - pearls, glass beads and novelty beads. You can also twine fine foil braid or ribbon around the beads to give your tree special holiday flair.

The Candy Cane Christmas Tree

This little tree looks nice using candy canes that are either red or green striped. Once again you will need some kind of conical armature. If you make a really small one you don't need an armature at all. The idea is to make a teepee frame using long candy canes. Then take smaller ones (or chop of the length of the longer ones) and place them symmetrically around the tree frame with the hooks of the candy canes u upside down and sticking up like branches. If you are really ambitious you can also glue candies to the tipped up edges with butter cream frosting to resemble Christmas decorations.

The Lollipop Christmas Tree

This is one of the simplest of do it yourself unusual christmas trees. All that is required is a Styrofoam armature and red and green lollipops. You can also roll up a piece of stiff paper that is green in color into a cone and poke the stems of the lollipops through the tree so that only the candy part is showing. This is done so that the lollipops are facing downwards to look like tree boughs. You can use a brightly colored yellow lollipop stuck with the stem straight down through the top of the cone to be the tree-topper. This is one of the more unusual christmas tree ideas.

The Marshmallow and Gum Drop Tree

This is inspired by one of Martha Stewart's unusual christmas tree ideas. All you need to create this is a conical Styrofoam shape in the size you desire (to use as an armature) and some mint green and white marshmallows. You spear the marshmallows on a toothpick or pin and then affix them to the sides of the Styrofoam cone so that it simulates an evergreen with snow-laden boughs. You can also decorate this tree with edible gold or silver cake decorations. A Christmas star made out of shortbread covered with glitter makes a great tree topper for these types of unusual christmas trees.

The Pine Cone Tree

To make this tree all you need is several very healthy looking pine cones. Glue them together in a conical shape until you have a shape that resembles a christmas tree. Glue acorns and holly berries on the sides to mimic christmas decorations and glue a large one on top of the tree to create a christmas tree topper.

If this look is too naturalistic for you can always spray paint the tree silver and paint the acorns a gold color.

The Pipe Cleaner Christmas Tree

This is one of the classic christmas tree ideas that is fun to do with the kids. All you need is lengths of green pipe cleaner cut into equal shapes and beads with holes large enough to slip over the pipe cleaners.

Your next step is to create a trunk out of a single pipe cleaner or two. Simply find a wine cork and jab the end of the pipe cleaner into the cork to create a base for the tree. The limbs of the tree can then be constructed from pipe cleaners that are twisted outward from the trunk to resemble branches. The beads can then be slipped over the pipe cleaner branches as decorations. A star shaped bead can be used as the tree topper.

The Puff Pastry Christmas Tree

You have probably seen those wedding cakes that are made of puff pastry filled with cream and then stacked in a pyramid shape. Usually these are drizzled with chocolate icing. These actually look like Christmas Trees.

You can make the same recipe and stack the christmas puffs in a conical shape. Then instead of chocolate drizzle try drizzling them with a white icing to mimic snow. Edible gold and red glitter can mimic the effect of christmas decorations and a pastry pipe filled with red or green decorating gel be spiraled around the cake to achieve the effect of christmas garlands. You can also dispense with all of that fuss and just wrap it with spiral of pretty ribbon.

Of course this kind of cake will need some kind of topper. Instead of a bride and groom, why not top it with a battery run blinking snowflake or star?

The Sequined Christmas Tree

This novelty miniature tree is one of the prettiest of unusual christmas ideas but it takes a lot of patience to realize it perfectly. To make one all you need is a lot of hatpins with pearl tips (preferably in christmas colors such as white, green and red) and bags of sequins in the colors of your choice. The idea is that these sequins will be threaded onto the hatpins and painstakingly tucked into a conical Styrofoam shape until no white space is left. Tiny plastic crystals can also be suspended by pins to serve as xmas decorations.

The Tropical Fruit Christmas Tree

If you like christmas tree ideas that are made of food then you will like this exotic centerpiece. This centerpiece is made of pomegranates of different sizes (to mimic the look of a red christmas tree.) Larger pomegranates are placed in a circle on the bottom and the smaller ones are stacked on top until a tree shape is achieved. You can then tuck lychee nuts (still in their natural gauzy white wrapping) in between the pomegranates to simulate gold and white xmas decorations. The tree topper can be made from a slice of star fruit that has been dipped in candied sugar.

NHL Hockey Party Supplies & Party Planning

!: NHL Hockey Party Supplies & Party Planning

NHL hockey is back! With the new season comes a really cool new party supplies line that will make throwing the perfect hockey party seem like a breeze. I also have some great ideas to throw the ultimate street hockey birthday party regardless of the season! Winter or Summer, on snow or on pavement - a hockey fan is a hockey fan!

Invitations: Take a picture of the birthday child in their hockey gear for the front of the invitation. Make it a really cool pose with a hockey stick or in front of a net because this is going to made into a trading card invitation! Using card stock paper, trace out the accurate size of a trading card and then glue the pic onto it. On the back of the card instead of the stats, write the party information. Use your computer and some really cool black font for this. The last step would be to laminate or "mac tack" the card. You could hand them out as is or take it one step further. Along with the card, you could send a letter from the NHL Hockey League stating that they have been drafted by the NHL and they are required to report for practise along with their teammates from all across the country. Be sure to include the date, time and request that they come prepared with stick & jersey. Sign it by the president of the NHL or the head coach of your child's favourite team place in an envelope and seal. Don't forget the clip art logos to make it look super official!

Activities: A street hockey game of course! When all of the guests arrive, have a meeting in the locker room and tell them what they will be doing for their first day of practise. Take a moment to explain the rules of a street hockey game and the importance of good sportsmanship. Then surprise them with their very own jersey name plates. Before the party, use your computer to write out each child's last name in bold print and laminate. As you call out names, pin each name tag to the back of the child's jersey and assign them a team by pulling names or colours out of a hat. Have a few jerseys on hand in case some come without. Once everyone is geared, up, it is time to head out. The prep for the playing field would be 2 nets on opposite ends with the center line and the goalie crease lines marked out. On dry pavement this can be done with chalk and on snow this can be done with watered done poster paint. Face Off! Have some referees with whistles and cheerleaders with Pom Poms. Make sure to have plenty of water and sports drinks available. Have a fire blazing in a portable fire pit to warm up on a cold Winters day and a Sprinkler set up for the kids to run through on the hottest summer day. You really can have a hockey party all year round! If weather does not allow you to be outside or if you simply prefer the party to be indoors try these fun games and activities. Have an indoor hockey tournament using an air hockey table or a rod hockey table. If you don't already have a table, chances are you know someone who does. Play "slapshot" using a goal, a stick but instead of a puck or ball, use a beach ball. It won't hurt even if it does hit something or someone! Keep the net empty and the shooter about 15 feet back. Its harder than you might think! Be sure to have a hockey game playing on TV and a separate area set up with a gaming system like Wii or PlayStation where they can play their favourite hockey game.

Decorations: Even though the premise of this plan is to be outdoors most of the time, it still is fun to decorate one area of your house that may be used like the kitchen, where the food and cake are served, or the living room where the presents are opened. Decorate with the NHL licensed tableware and decorations. Decorate your walls with hockey memorabilia like posters, pictures and pennants. Place around old pucks, helmets, skates, jersey's or sticks that are not in use to give it that real locker room feel. Finish the decorations off with balloons and streamers in your child's favourite teams colours.

Menu: Go with stadium food. Serve hot dogs in foil , nachos in take out boxes and french fries out of paper cups. Keep it simple. This way the guests can eat indoors, outdoors or on the go. You might just have to drag them in for cake and presents though!

Loot Bags: Throw a twist into the regular tradition of the loot bag. Have an auction of sorts. Have a table full of items that the kids can purchase with their hockey money. Purchase a variety of favors like candy, pucks, hockey trinkets and even a few bigger ticket items. The idea would be for every kid to have around the same amount of money at auction time - 00. The first time they receive money is when they arrive - Their 0 signing bonus. Throughout the game give 0 bonuses for sportsmanship, good manners and teamwork. Monopoly money works great. The actual cost of the items can rage from .99 to .00. For example, the .99 items should cost 0 in hockey money and the .00 items costing the whole 00 in hockey money. Some kids may go all in for 1 item, and some may choose several small. The key is to have a wide variety of all price ranges. Pick names out of a hat to see who goes first and in what order. To be fair, have them choose only 1 item, whether its big or small. Keep going in order until everyone is out of money. Last of all, make sure to explain the auction well beforehand to avoid any confusion. The excitement level will be unbelievable as everyone is going home a winner!

Heat Transfer, R-Value, and Spray Foam Insulation

!: Heat Transfer, R-Value, and Spray Foam Insulation

The energy conservation industry has experienced explosive growth while continuing to develop new technologies. For the consumer, deciding which materials and devices offer the greatest return on investment can often be confusing.

Over the last five decades, thorough research reveals that the greatest energy savings per dollar invested comes from maximizing the insulation value of a home or business. Among the different insulation materials, spray foam insulation offers substantial advantages over competing systems.

Heat Transfer: Conduction, Convection, and Radiant

The purpose of any insulating material is to slow the transfer of heat. To compare the relative effectiveness of the different insulation alternatives, it is important to understand how heat moves through materials and space.

Conduction:

Conductive heat transfer is the process where thermal energy travels through the mass of a material on a molecular level. Conduction occurs when heat passes through a single material or multiple materials that are in direct contact with one another.

Conduction is a primary method that heat uses to migrate through the ceiling, floors and walls of a structure. Placing spray foam insulation directly between two highly conductive materials will substantially slow the process, especially when compared to other insulation types such as fiberglass or cellulose.

Convection:

Heat that moves through the air is called convective transfer. Differing pressures between warm and cold air provide the mechanism for this kind of movement as warm air seeks out colder air. Since warm air escapes through breaches in a building's envelope, additional fuel must be used to heat the colder air that replaced it.

In the cooling season, the convection transfer reverses as warmer air from the outside infiltrates into the home. Spray in foam insulation systems that seal the perimeter of the building are most effective in eliminating convention currents.

Radiant Heat:

Heat that is transferred through the electromagnetic spectrum is known as radiant heat. This form of heat transfer is best addressed through installing materials with surfaces that have exceptional reflectivity properties.

R-Values and Spray Foam Insulation

Most insulation systems are designed to address conduction fairly well, while doing a poor job of addressing convection and radiant heat transfer. The insulation industry has adopted a standard called "R-value" which is a measurement of conductive heat transfer through an insulating material over a given period of time. The problem with this standard is where its focus is, conductive heat transfer which is only small part of the pie when it comes to whole issue of heat transfer. Spray foam insulation is the only type of major insulation that performs at a high level across all three fronts of heat transfer: conduction, convection, and radiant heat transfer which makes it the best choice for keeping your home comfortable and your energy costs low.
